We're following the election with interest in Australia.

Local polls on who Aussies would elect are about 85;15 in favour of Obama. Wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the World was similar.

Probably 2 - 3 yrs, don't have fixed terms, max 4 years but they tend to call it earlier if they think the've got a better chance.

Canberra, the nations capital. Melbourne and Sydney are the main cities but they couldn't agree so we got a rather sterile pllace between the two occupied in the main by pollies, civil servants and journos, not much else worth going there for.

Spreadeagle--as a regular, I am pleased with where I am and some day I may achieve Pro status, then again it is not important if I do. I have no desire to be an elite. Whereever I am I prefer to be there based on my own efforts, not your forced giving.

redbirds, that is a wonderful attitude. I can assure you that this is the only place I am considered "elite". I have always worked hard for what little I have and I just don't like the idea of someone taking it from me to give to someone else who hasn't worked for it. Don't get me wrong, I give plenty to many different charities. My father taught me a great lesson: "Help those can't, ignore those who won't".

the real worry about distribution of wealth under obama is that the democrats have a very real potential to control the House, Senate, AND Presidency, creating a mostly unstoppable super majority that can more easily pass legislation

definitely not, but none of the existing candidates are Bush, or are "just like Bush", so that's a non-issue

and the reality is that Bush hasn't done much of anything that the Democratic Congress didn't put before him

I don't know about the congress.. It is difficult from abrade. But Obama looks like CIA and McCane like another Bush. I know it's too simplistic but, still, Obama represents some kind of change. At least if Obama gets the presidency, it will look like Americans are not racially biased. Please don't think I am trying to offend anybody

Ugh. I've really grown to dislike the notion that a vote against Obama is a vote for racism and vice versa. It definitely helps his campaign, though.

Thankfully there are more than two parties we can vote for. Hopefully the other parties get enough votes to help them in the future as a result of this mess!

Did you know that when the Great Depression occured in 1929 the top 0.1% of Americans had a combined income equal to the bottom 42%. That same top 0.1% of Americans in 1929 controlled 34% of all savings, while 80% of Americans had no savings at all.

Did you know that NOW, in 2007/2008, the top 1% of earners earn more than the bottom 70% of all earners? (I think that 70% is higher, but I can't find where the stats on that are this morning)

IMO, it is because of this gap that we need to rollback the tax cuts to those earning >$250K and to increase that salary cap. And my family will not save as much under Obama's plan as we would with McCain. Those earning >$2.8M would pay .5M more under Obama's plan (think about how many of the 0.1% of the US population earning $2.8M earn that MUCH more than that amount & .5M is only 20% of that). Under McCain, they would actually save .25M than what they currently pay

yes. when our top earners pay taxes only on earnings up to $250K, then they pay a smaller percentage than all the other brackets.

our top earners pay taxes well beyond $250k...that's never been the problem. the problem is all the loopholes in the tax code that makes it easy to exclude money from taxation

My solution to income taxes is to repeal the 16th amendment. Replace it with an amendment that recognizes that a tax on income is a direct tax and thus subject to apportionment among the states as provided in Art. I Section 2 of the Constitution.

Perhaps we should change tax day to coincide with election day. You fill out your taxes on one side of a form and vote on the other side :)

How about 1 vote for each 1000 dollars you actually pay in taxes? Let those that pay the most have control over how it is spent? :-)
