what is the best way to approach these the first time? This is the first time I've tried and just when I think it is getting close I get stuck.

i don't think that's related to it being your first time

that happens a lot

a mental break, many of us find, clears the air - alternating between sudoku and word games, for instance.

i don't really have a method though. it's too random

i play babble. that's easy compared to this

yes, it helps to take a babble break

then you come back and suddenly you see something obvious that wasn't obvious before

agree with hurshy, it happens. but generally, i scan for obvious numbers by cross-hatching, starting with 1s in the upper-left and working across and down, then looking for missing numbers in 3x3 blocks then rows and columns. then it gets tougher, having to think ahead a step or two. if all else fails, use greens / reds to keep notes (shift-click and alt-click)

it helps to have a cat.

oh the shift function is useful. didn't know about that. i was working with paper, pencil and rubber...
