I never use the script, that doesn't work for me. Too many options. And I love to reason the puzzle out step by step. But I am verrrrrry slow with tough ones.

Andy, check out my profile - there's something there I called a "green script" - if you paste it in your browser window it fills in the numbers for you

Yeah, someone wrote a pretty brilliant script that fills in the greens for you. But it doesn't leave out some impossibles, like when in some upper box a number MUST be put left, it will not leave out that number in the rest of the left column.

still trying to find out. want to thank them and ask if they can write one that will remove all green numbers

it may be quite tempting to use, and i have just barely started tonight, so who knows this may be the demise of my streak w/out the green

Done, with much gratitude to the script. (Yes, I'm a cheapskate)

I don't think a script really saves that much time on the hard ones

I sometimes play with sudoku susser, which fills in the numbers

It's done wonders for me on a number of the difficult ones

I find I spend nearly as much time rethinking everything to find the next moves because I haven't thought through the puzzle in filling in hints where needed

but maybe that's just me

If anything it's improved my ability to catch the number sets that often break a puzzle open

Obviously, I am as blind as bat to not see that even with the paintball decal scars.

then again, it might have saved me from making a silly mistake and having to restart tonights. I haven't had to spend 30 minutes on a puzzle here in a loong time

I have no shame when it comes to using greens anyhow, and I am a lazy bastard, so the script suits me well ^^;

Well, it's finally starting to move for me.

Regarding your debate about automated fill-ins, I would rather not have that. I prefer to think my way through it with manual aids, like the red-green marking. But, to each his/her own.

(I do tend to use it as a final resort though, I do like to try and give it my best efforts first)

i'm already filling it with green. but that's only helped me to get another number in so far! it's going to be a long day . . .

I try to limit my greens to just boxes with pairs of locations to start with.

Then I fill in the rest...

Usually you can get most of the way (at least on easy/medium) with that, and its much easier to see the forces squares

what do you mean by 'forces squares'?

like if there is a pair of 4s in a box, usually in a row or column, its easy to see that they block any other 4s in that row or column

No guessing is required

afraid it is for me!

The main thing is to spot the cases where three squares in a row or column can be made up of only three numbers

eg 12, 23, 123. Then you can eliminate 1,2&3 from all the other squares in that row/column

I dont remember any puzzle that had so many sets of three (normally its just sets of 2)

How does this work? If I put in a number, do they tell me if I am wrong or let me find out for myself later?

You'll kow when you are wrong.

No, only if let's say there is already a 5, then it will say, "Hey, dude! You have two in the same square! Cool it man!"

It doesn't identify that a specific number is wrong, but it'll warn you if there's a conflict such as two of the same number in a row/column/box

in this version you can make little green numbers in the squares for your possibilities by holding down the shift key and clicking your choice.
