The problem with ironsudoku is that it is so anticlimactic. You wait all day for a puzzle. And then a few minutes later, all you have is: Tomorrow's puzzle will be available in 23+ hours

saw an interesting book last week at a conference: "programming sudoku"

Was it about solving Sudoku problems or writing them?

almost bought it except all the code was visual basic (yuk) and it didn't appear from a casual glance that the authors really knew much about sudoku

either that or they inentionally dumbed it down

I've written a Java program to solve Sudoku puzzles ... and it wasn't too difficult to write. Writing a program to generate the puzzles would be more challenging -- particularly if it is ensuring that there is only one solution.

that looked like the only interesting part. the solver was "do a bunch of simple techniques and then brute force the rest"

I thought there might be some actual discussion of algorithms or optimizations

Well, with modern computer speeds, brute force for an "Expert" level puzzle only takes a second or two to solve. It is a small enough data set, even with all possible combinatorials considered, that it is not worth optimizing.
