i only got half the words, but i was busy all day yesterday, i was hoping to get back to it after a CD Release party for a friend of mine, but another friend was driving and got in an accident, so i just got home 20 min ago

dagnabit, there's a unique rectangle in this one too - I'm *loving* this new trick!

umm.. if you have three corners of a rectangle and they all contain the pair AB, you know that the 4th corner of the rectangle cannot contain either A or B.. because that would create a sudoku puzzle that has two correct solutions.

i first discovered one on the expert puzzle a few days ago.

the unique rectangle strategy only works when the rectangle span 2 boxes, so be careful!

span 2 boxes?

If it was all within one box, it'd already be impossible (with 12 12 12 in three squares)...?

if it spans 4 boxes then it could be legitimate so you couldn't cancel one of the pairs

If it spans four boxes, you still can't end up with 12 12 12 12 in the four squares of a rectangle, because then the solution would not be unique.

sometimes there is more than one solution :) Its happened here a couple of times recently...

it is not a legal sudoku puzzle if there is more than one solution. Which puzzles?

Without the unique solution requirement, the "unique rectangles" technique would not work even if the four squares spanned only two boxes...?

From wikipedia "a computer program is capable of exhaustively searching a Sudoku puzzle for solutions, thereby determining whether it is valid (has exactly one solution) or not"
