this is probably a really dumb question - but - for any one number, are the 9 occurrences in different places in the boxes - i.e. one 9 would be top left, one 9 would centre top, one 9 would be right top etc

yes, this one just sort of came together. Once I got the board filled out, I think it took me about 60 seconds.

basically you never have to guess - thats the point of a sudoku

i would say there are any number of "guessing" styles. one would be just filling in random numbers, seeing what fits, and moving on. highly inefficient. to a lesser degree, marginal notation is guessing, but it's a more logical sort.

because it at least forces you to think first.

not everyone's brain works the same. some people can't handle the type of logic you and i use to solve these. some people rely on hunches and things like that.

so for them, maybe guessing is the superior method.

i can't relate to that directly, but i certainly have friends who can.

an easier method, a simpler method. not necessarily the better method, in that it's very inefficient.

like i said, it doesnt matter if you guess or not, i was just saying it defeats the whole challenging aspect of the puzzle, because this puzzle like most puzzle are geared to work on the logic, not on how well you can guess/predict/read the cards (lol)

it's inefficient in that it would take longer. there would be more placement, removal, placement, removal. the quickest (efficiency by speed) method would be to know all of the logical number traps.

some people are so logical that they can't imagine any other way of solving a puzzle like this. but there are other ways, even if they don't work as well for you or for me.

I know that I use -- I guess they would be logical number traps (although I don't know what they are), but I've only guessed in a handful of situations, and it was one of those, "it could be a 1 or a 3" and I have exhausted all my brain's capacity up to that point

What method do you prefer? Searching a number that fits a certain field or searching a field which belongs to some number? (i prefer searching a field for a given number)

Number for a field feels more natural to me.

I'm not good at memorizing things if i search i field for a number i have to memorize one number if i do it the other way around i have to momorize 9 possibilities

maybe thats one reason for me being slow solving sudokus ;)

It's a great feeling when your mind suddenly clicks around one of those hard-to-see logical steps that lets you get out of a deadlock. Of course, it's also kinda irritating, because once you see it you realise how OBVIOUS it was.

What does that mean?

if you shift-click on a number, it fills in a little green number as a guess, which you can replace with the real thing once you're sure

you can say that one square must be the 3, 5, or 6 for example

the thing that took me the longest to learn was going and checking the rows and columns whenever the blocks don't give me anything useful

Did you have to actually guess at all?

I feel like there are some logical rules I am forgetting about.

if two numbers can only be in the same two boxes within a block, then no other numbers can be there

so like if the 1 and 3 can only be in (1,1) and (1,2), you can remove all other guesses from those squares

i'm having such a hard time with this one

the same rule applies to 3 numbers in 3 squares, and so one, though with the 9x9 puzzle you usually only get pairs

this puzzle uses that rule a lot

you can also look at the rows and columns with this rule -- so going back to that 1 and 3, you can look at everything else on the top row and if there were any 1s or 3s in the other blocks on the top row, remove those guesses

oh yeah, and when i fill in guesses, i fill in every occurrence of a number in a block -- so all the 1s in the upper right, and so on. you have to stick to a consistent rule about guessing or you'll get mixed up

i dunno, it sounds like you grasp all the rules, you just need to scan around some more and find some more places to eliminate guesses

if you need to, fill in *all* the guesses for every open square, and then start looking around at the rows and columns for more pairs
