i only got one number without guessing, and now i'm systematically making guesses and going back to checkpoints as necessary

Oh, lol - well, there's a bad medium one from last week too...

i'm trying to keep my score up on the "cream o' the crop" list, so i haven't been doing easy or medium

maybe i'll make an exception for that one, if it's as hard as you say :)

Just looked at the archives - I think it was Thursday's puzzle.

Hadn't realized that the easy and medium ones lower your rankings. Oh well - I like doing them all anyway. If there was a puzzle of each level each day to choose from, then I could see picking the harder ones only.

yeah, I can't bother with the cream of the crop rating

yeah, you have to decide which list you want to be on -- doing only highly ranked puzzles keeps you at the top of the first one, but doing all of them keeps you at the top of the second. i like that they're balanced that way

I'm not too strong on the advanced techniques yet, so the expert ones do a job on me. April 12th has been "in progress" for a while now - I try it again now and then.

i have a sneaking suspicion that some of the high level puzzles on this site just can't be done without making a guess based on the green numbers you've marked

but maybe there are just some tactics that i haven't learned yet

well, it's not technically a guess if you're just trying one to see if you run into a contradiction

Skiz, I just wish I had a set of practice problems that had those set up so I could try to apply the techniques successfully. The only one I've had luck with so far is an occasional x-wing.

funny thing is, i've never needed to use an x-wing. i think there's always another way to eliminate possibilities

every time i start looking for x-wing or swordfish, i just find myself going around in circles

probably, but I tend to go from the simple eliminations to the difficult ones without going back and trying the simpler ones again after changes have been made

I don't even want to think about swordfish...I sort of skip past that one, lol

more useful to me is eliminating things by looking for, say, two blocks on the same row that have 3s in only the bottom two rows, so the third block on the bottom row has to have 3s only in the top row

which is very similar to x-wing, but easier for me to spot quickly

locked pairs and triples are great for eliminating numbers, love finding the triples (if that's the right name)

right, those are the most common eliminations, those and naked pairs and triples

quads are great too, but too often I then realize there are only 5 boxes in the row/column, and the 5th has a hidden single... /smackhead

hehe

if you can get your hands on a sudoku book that has jigsaw puzzles, those really help you think outside the box, so to speak
