Phil - You are conflating the impeachment hearing in the Senate with a criminal jury trial. It is no such thing. The senate hearing is to determine the the articles of impeachment as presented by the House meet the Constitutional requirements of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors. The "jury" is the Senate - an elected political body. The "impeachers" are the House- an elected political body. This is nothing like a trial - it is a political activity with showboating by both parties. The House sent the to the Senate knowing that there was no chance of them voting to remove the President.

While you may have your opinion about our form of government - it works well for our country. If the framers wanted and parliamentary system for America, they would have installed one. But they did not and I for one, am eternally grateful for that. The beauty of the Constitution is that there are provisions for changing it. It is difficult and time consuming but has been done.
