Hello Peter.

hi
8:18 am
drwho

I assume it is evening where you are.
8:19 am
peternl

yup
8:19 am
drwho

And it is autumn.
8:20 am
drwho

But here it is a fine spring morning.
8:21 am
hokie carla

Spring-like here, too. But that will only last about 30 more min., then it will be blazing hot.
8:22 am
drwho

Current temperature in Minneapolis is 53.
8:23 am
drwho

...Fahrenheit.
8:25 am
hokie carla

68 here in Charlotte.
8:27 am
drwho

Forecast is high of 70 here today. Not blazing hot.
8:30 am
hokie carla

High 84 here. We'll see. I hope it doesn't get much hotter - my son's field day at school is today.
8:30 am
drwho

Today's puzzle scores 27. Some hidden and naked pair analysis needed.
8:32 am
hokie carla

Once I marked it, it was almost too easy. Seems easier than the usual medium. What did you say the avg. medium score was?
8:33 am
drwho

Just a minute, I'll get you a fresh one...
8:33 am
sprite

ah nice, a hard one
8:35 am
drwho

Average score for hard puzzles is 25.55. That includes today's puzzle, but excludes about the first month and a half of puzzles.
8:36 am
sprite

I will never understand those scores of yours :)
8:37 am
drwho

If you do this without green, the trick is to find the number in the upper right hand corner.
8:37 am
sprite

I like to proddle along until I solve it... only use greens when I get totally stuck.
8:39 am
drwho

If you're interested, the algorithm is explained here:

8:45 am

If you follow the hypertext link to scores, you can see a listing of all the scores for puzzles I have analyzed and the statistics too.

9:14 am
spellacked

dang, I've been searching for hidden pairs and I'm just not finding it. Sprite--do you have a clue for me?
9:19 am
coppershep

I found a hidden triple when marking and that took care of it for me...didn't need to finish marking even
9:20 am
spellacked

ah -- I think I found it...
9:26 am
spellacked

Yup... I had a triple hidden in the lower middle box that had eluded my grasp, it all fell through after that.
9:28 am
dorens

i must be blind- cannot see a triple in that box!
9:31 am
drwho

I found 3 pairs in that box, that left only 1 candidate in the 7th empty cell.
9:33 am
dorens

well-- I don't really know terminology yet. so i ended up with two pairs here, and willmuddle along in my own weird, unweildy and time wasting fashion
9:35 am
Frances

I just persevere until I (hopefully) finish. So will someone please tell me, what are hidden pairs and hidden triples?
9:36 am
dorens

sorry, i'm not the best to explain... don't really understand myself... but if there are only two possible candidates in two cells of a row, column or box.. that is a hidden pair ( i think)
9:39 am
Krys10

very sad! browser crashed, hadn't saved!
9:39 am
dorens

poor krys
9:42 am
Krys10

i bet there's a good xy-chain in here somewhere - keep seeing the same two pairs
9:43 am
Frances

....and an xy-chain is???
9:43 am
dorens

done! but have no idea how i did it. and sorry frances, don't know that... but i think it is what i call if this, then that
9:45 am
Krys10

here, frances, try this explanation - haven't used xy-chains before myself, just learned about them recently:
