I don't use "selective elimination of alternatives", I just guess.

Geez, I thought that was guessing....

Love pompous writing ;)

Guessing is "I'm stuck so I'll put in a number I think might be correct and see what happens."

Selective elimination is "I have removed almost all the false greens but am left with two possibilities, either of which may be correct, so I'll find out which is right by trying one of them and if it turns out to be wrong I'll come back to this point knowing that the other is correct." It is an exact equivalent of the time honored mathematical technique called "reductio ad absurdum" - look it up if you don't believe me.

Sounds like guessing to me.

Yes, but now we have a fancy name for it with which we can amaze our friends.

You're missing the point. The name is not just fancy, it's Latin, so it must be right.

Reductio ad absurdum veritas est.

Too funny. Thanks to both of you for the laugh of the morning.

I never use greens so after cross hatching both vertically and horizontally, I review each box for reasonable possibilities and finally do the "selective elimination" bit. I am amazed that my initial entry is usually the correct entry (guess?)

most of the time on easy puzzles, I pick a number that has the least representation and then wait to the end of the puzzle and fill all of those in last. For example, this puzzle only had one 9 given - so I solved all the other numbers and then filled in all the 9's.

I usually do the 1 through 9s, then log through lines or boxes with few numbers remaining, then try anything else that works. If I still haven't cracked it - always the experts, I'll start putting manual greens in, never use auto greens, then finally when I can't see the solution, pick a one of two options left and guess. Right about 50% as you would expect, sometimes it doesn't lead far enough and you end up trying a different one of 2 option.

I run the puzzle through my Sudoku Solving program and then type something to make someone upset. :-) Kidding about the program.
