Tall Mike: Samuel Johnson must not have had much of a sense of humor to have maligned the pun all those years ago. Thanks for the laugh of the day!

pretty easy once I dropped the greens in, pretty opaque before that.

done, using greens and 1 lucky guess that turned out to be correct. And just so I'm understanding the terminology in use by @spellacked and @UnlikeTheHuner, can someone confirm that "virtuals" = "greens" = "possible numbers that might go in a cell". I do get most of the concepts behind using URs (though I'm shaky on the Type 3s), and a good reference for others who may not have used them to solve puzzles in the past is http://www.sudokuwiki.org/Unique_Rectangles

Judy, I don't know if my explanations are very clear, but I have a webpage devoted to sudoku techniques. I believe what spellacked and UnikeTheHunter refer to as virtuals are what I call virtual crosshatching.

Check my profile for the URL.

Well, I just checked my profile and there are lots of URLs but not the exact one you want:

The home page:
http://sudoku.pauls-pc-repair.com/
Sudoku techniques:
http://sudoku.pauls-pc-repair.com/index.php?p\nage=Techniques
And I recommend referring to this page where I define terms:

Thank you, @drwho. Your Sudoku Techniques page is very helpful

I've been using a lot of the techniques shown, but never had a name for them. I like to develop my own approaches to solving any type of puzzle, starting with brute force methods, and then understanding the patterns I see as I go along. However, this approach (I clearly see now) is "reinventing the wheel" (chuckle) ... but I do understand "my ways", and like learning any new solving techniques (in math/science/logic-related subject matter), practice with the new techniques will give me confidence and understanding in using them. Thanks to all for your support and guidance!

Judy, No, "virtuals" and "greens" are entirely different.
~"Greens" are unique to IronSudoku, the tiny green colored numbers that may be placed in cells as a crutch.
~"Virtuals" are explainable best by example. In today's puzzle, the central block contains a "virrual 7." (After placing a 5 in the central cell) it's right edge may be treated as though a 7 were there, precluding a 7 in the right edge of the bottom central block.

There's a neat trick early on in today's puzzle that involves the number 7 in two of another kind of virtual -- block virtuals acting in tandem. I hope you can see it, just because it's cute.

DING. That cute trick I mentioned may have been the Medium trick. I didn't see any other. Kinda slow. 18.

TallMike - I recently went to Alaska to see an eye doctor, but it turns out he was an optical Aleutian.

We just passed the winter solstice -the birthday of King Arthur's shortest knight.

Even though the eye doctor was an Aleutian you might have been able to see one of his pupils.

A company I once worked for in England has just notified me that I must provide proof of my existence if I want them to continue paying my small pension. Not proof that I am still alive but literally a certificate of existence. Will I ultimately have to demonstrate that I think as proof that I am? How would I do that?

Boo Mr Oo. Political jokes are currently unwelcome here. We're all just having fun.
