yeah, it started off easy yesterday... then just hit a wall

I had to guess to solve it.

Nothing I tried helped at all.

Somebody said something about using "jellyfish", a 4 x 4 version of "swordfish", but I couldn't make it work.

I might look at the puzzle again. It was uniquely hard. I have a hard time seeing swordfish, much less 4x4..

I seem to reall using an x wing to eliminate one or 2 2's but it didn't open much up.

yul--guessing (or forcing) is a 'last resort' when other logical techniques are exhausted.

not at all. all techniques are equally 'guessing' only in forcing chain there is no define pattern

That's fine. After all, it's just a puzzle played for fun. I like to understand the logic of the solution. If there is any.

you could have a really nice and short forcing chains some times which could help solve expert puzzles without filling out greens or much effort at all. I don't like to struggle :)

That's interesting. I'm trying to catch up after being gone for 10 days and the May 3rd medium is giving me a fit.

Grrrrr! I did something wrong from the beginning and I had to start over. This is a rather difficult easy.

my point is that the yesterday's expert was very easy to solve with an eight step forcing chain between 6/8.

i've gone back to using greens for easys. Decided life is too short, at least until the end of the semester!

I almost always use greenies except for the easiest of the easies. I like to devote most of my time to Babbling.

Finally Done! That was a lot of work for an easy.

done. it wasn't terrible; didn't have to use greens but had to keep track of a fair amount of stuff instead. still, way easier than the hellish one from yesterday

Todays puzzle scores 23. Of the 312 Iron Sudoku puzzles I have evaluated so far, the average score is 25. The average easy puzzle is a little over 18.

what was yesterday's? working on that right now.

haha - I've already resorted to guessing. but I don't like to call it guessing, just trial & error. :-)

Yesterday's was only 41 compared to the average of 52.26 for the 23 expert puzzles that I have evaluated so far.

Interesting. With the exception of one nasty one early on, most of the experts have been manageable & this one is turning into a PITA. Maybe I made a mistake marking the greens, or maybe I should go eat lunch.

The experts that I have evaluated have 2 tied for the top score of 94. There really aren't enough data point to see any clustering of the scores around the average. The lowest score for an expert is 29 so far.

oh, well. going to eat lunch now.
