@TallMike - what you echo is Brexit propaganda, not the facts. At the time of the treaty of Rome (which does include fishery) the territotial zon was 6 miles, which was expanded to 12 miles in 1964 in a Pan_europan Fishery treaty. What the UK now claims is a future command over the 12-200 miles zone, but that is only possible since a UN decision form 1994 - that has nothing to do with the EU at all and certainly not with the treaties in the 1970's.

Moreover, this has been an age-old dispute in this area. In the 17th century the Dutch stateman Hugo Grotius published Mare Librum, a plea for free trade at sea. The British did not agree and in 1635 followed by Mare Clausium from John Selden. Eventually (after several wars between these two states) another Dutchman proposed the three=miles zone of terreitorial waters (as far as a cannon in those days could reach). That solved it for a couple of centuries until after WWII when it was enlarged to 6 miles and to 12 miles in 1964 in Europe. The biggest opponent of larger limits was the UK itself, they fought the "cod wars" over Icelands territorial boundaries until 1976. (See wikipedia). They lost. It is very ironic that they now claim what they did not want Iceland to have, what's more, blaming the EU for that.

So, waht is illegal and arbitrary here?

Ann Coulter, really?? Why not Alex Jones?? Colin Kapernik has an American Flag flying in his front yard? Nothing disrespectful about kneeling during National Anthem. Probably more respectful than standing. This is not about anything other than people "standing" in solidarity that they would like to see something done about People of Color being murdered by Police. Plain and simple. Any other take is obfuscation to keep from dealing with the real issue.

It seems to me that it is sadly a racial problem that Trump is exacerbating. The majority of NFL and NBA players are black yet their viewers are white. Moreover it comes as a result of athletic prowess and a gladiatorial combat. Sad that white viewers do not care about their injuries. Nascar participants tend to be white (money is required to get noticed as a quick driver). Also owners sadly threatened their drivers with being fired if they took a knee. I was impressed today by the 97 year old WW2 veteran who took the knee in solidarity believing in their right to protest. For too long the unconscionable behaviour of police and judiciary in the US about the mistreatment of black people has continued and Trump has fuelled the fire. I have the utmost respect for their peaceful protest and their right to do so. BTW the games are boring because of the ridiculous control over them by TV. I urge you all to start watching this weekends Australian Rules Grand Final between the Adelaide Crows and the Richmond Tigers. You may not understand it but it may just blow you away! It's fast, continuous and physical with no padding!

Tuco, your posts always make me smaile, cringy worthy as they are :) People of Color wouldn't be killed by police if they didn't commit crimes and, wait for it, if caught or confronted by police - they would comply with the officer! Holy hell, imagine that. Don't blame the cops for the criminals actions, anything else is just obfuscation to keep from dealing with the real issue, which is decades of liberal policies have decimated minorities in America and this is but one of the results. Kapernick and the rest of the National Felon League are just another result, though its millionaire People of Color trying to get street cred and their humorous #hashtag army of sympathizers. Maybe police should just play the National Anthem when confronting People of Color committing crimes, then when they take a knee - arrest them. Google how often an NFL player is arrested - Every 7 days.

Phil, the majority of people who attend sporting events in the U.S. are white due to economic reasons. People of Color in the U.S. view sporting events at the same if not higher rate then any other group. Kaos, yay buddy Blue Lives Matter. It is the victim's fault. Black people should just shut up. Well Mr. Cringeworthy, our clock shop is in a strip mall with a bar at the other end. I was leaving the shop one night and pulled out of the parking lot without stopping. There was no stop sign. I was pulled over 1/4 mile down the road. Why? Because I was leaving a parking lot that had a bar in it and the cop wanted to see if I was DUI. No probable cause. You should have seen the look on his face when I pointed out that there was no law saying I couldn't pull out. So you are going to use the fact that a minority of professional athletes break the law that it is okay for police to murder POC? Talk about cringeworthy. When was the last time you stopped a lynching?

Tuco, in Oz we have random breath stops, don't need a reason to pull over a car. Nobody minds as it's helped dramatically reduce the road toll of innocent lives. But on the flip side, Police have to justify any use of force, it must not be more than is necessary, excessive or inappropriate. Recently I saw a US cop pull a gun on a woman who walked slowly toward an officer with a small knife begging to be shot. The Police officer then proceeded to shoot her. He would have been in serious trouble in Australia. His use of force was unjustified, non lethal taser could have been drawn and discharged to gain control.. She clearly had mental issues and the officer had many options. He could even have backed away and talked to her, there was no-one else nearby.

kaos don't know if you realized it but you were doing the same thing as Trump. Obfuscating the real reason why Kapernik and other players were not standing. Not because they are "felons", not because they are "Sons of B******", but because they are tired of being pulled over for not being white and some of them being murdered. Because a little boy of color playing with a toy gun in a public park was murdered. Because a boy walking home after buying skittles was murdered. And NO ONE has been convicted for these atrocities. They are protesting that the judicial system is saying it is okay for this to happen. They are protesting that there is something wrong with all this. Cringe all you want. It just shows that you need to get woke or you are part of the problem.

Phil, this has been going on in the U.S. forever. It is why POC have "the talk" with their adolescent children about the police. The reason it has become an "issue" lately is that it has been getting more attention due to cell phone cameras and police cameras. It is hard to say that it didn't happen a certain way when the video is right there for all to see.
7:25 am
Phil

There is also an expectation that an officer would have to justify his actions. The idea that Officer Noor can remain silent and not provide an account of events leading up to an Australian woman who had called for the police and dressed in her pyjamas for gods sake, was shot and then the officer doesn't say anything? Disgraceful.

Don't get me wrong, I think the US cops face a ridiculously dangerous task of tackling crime with an absurd amount of firearms out there. However, we see video time and again of victims being shot with no justification and the officers not charged. They fail the reasonableness test. Yes it's a split second decision, but with the lack of justice when they do the wrong thing, and seemingly always when the victim is black, I can't help bit think the majority of officers and the public must think this is wrong. If the only answer to get rid of guns, then just bloody well get on with it. Too many lives are lost for no reason. Just accept your right to have one is less important than someone dying.

Whoever has the guts to propose that should be the next president of the US.

hehe Phil, get rid of guns? Here? You might as well ask for the sun to rise in the West. Never going to happen. The big problem is that the Police protect their bad apples. Much like the Catholic church did with their bad apples. The transfer them around after an unjustified use of deadly force. There is a code of silence. Fortunately for us with cell phone video and greater awareness something may start to happen to stop this. Just like more people coming out about abuse by priests, maybe this protest and Black Lives Matter, etc.. will do something about excessive use of deadly force by our police.

Enough of the rant, now who's going to at least watch the Aussie Rules Grand Final? If anyone is interested and wants some pointers on the rules I'll be happy to help out. It's got some quirks, like you get rewarded if you miss!, well sort of!

Hope so Tuco, otherwise they lose their trust and it's damn hard to get it back. Everyone can make mistakes, but you can't shoot someone if you can't even see they have a gun!

@MrOoijer: Thank you for transforming our discussion of the 22 years of arbitrary EEC access to other EEC members' water rights (from 1970 until 1992) into a fishy history lesson spanning the period from the 17th century to the present day. It helped me to see some of the issues from a different perspective. However, you muddied the waters a bit in relation to my example of an arbitrary EEC regulation which destroyed a regional industry. My analysis was based not on Brexit propaganda but on the relevant portions of the Treaty of Rome and of EEC Council Regulation 2141/70, both of which are easily accessible online, and background information from a Scottish Democratic Alliance document published in connection with the 2014 Scottish referendum about the desire for Scottish independence from the UK, to which document I already provided a link.

Tuco, I'll give you that Alex Jones is almost as crazy as Bernie Sanders, but Ann Coulter is intelligent and amusing and gets her facts right far more often than the New York Times, or Howard Zinn or any other progressive propaganda outlet masquerading as a news organization or history professor.
