DrWho writes: One theory posits that it is government's job to provide for the welfare of its citizens. The other theory posits that governments should establish justice. These 2 objectives are mutually exclusive. If you try to create economic security for all, you must forget about justice, because taking from the rich and giving to the poor is unjust and thievery.

By DrWho's theory, the US is the only country on earth that is just and avoids thievery. Under this theory, first world countries- including those freedom-hating countries like Canada, Australia, Sweden - are unjust. Not.

I only understand people who believe as Dr. Who, kaos 1Hammer, etc... do IF they are worth more than 10-100 million dollars and their investments pull in more than $100K a year in interest/dividend income. Because then they are fighting to protect their own self interest. I get that. However if you are not in that economic group then you are fooling yourself and voting against your own self interest when you support those beliefs.

DrWho is using a straw man argument in an attempt to distract us. He started it by claiming that "there are 2 competing theories of government represented here" and that their objectives are mutually exclusive. But that's a fallacy. We know that justice and government welfare can coexist because they already do.

Let's consider instead what DrWho may be attempting to distract us from. Perhaps the need to map out a new middle ground when it comes to social justice issues, which we on this board have been discussing a lot in recent months.

Or perhaps something else entirely, such as the ongoing and growing interest in abolishing the US presidential electoral college system which continues to frustrate and mystify those of us who believe that we should practice what we preach by holding democratic national presidential elections with every citizen having one vote and all votes counting equally.
