The school sent me something saying they needed my tax return to give me financial aid. I don't recall them needing it last year.

I got something in the mail to that effect about three weeks ago. The FAFSA's not due until the beginning of June (or maybe July).

Yeah, I have the same problem. I look for them from time to time, but I just don't see them.

I've used Unique Rectangle several times. It's easy to see, a bit more difficult to understand.

I have a BS in CS, with a minor in math -- my mind is logically geared, so a lot of 'em make sense mathematically and logically -- it's just actually seeing the pattern still that I'm working on, but I'm getting pretty good at finding singles quickly and such

I used swordfish once, but the only reason I got it was because someone mentioned in the chat log which numbers it affected.

I try to pay attention to class for one second, and this turns into some combination of "Star Wars" and Hitler. Never a dull moment, I guess.

Let's say you have four squares -- like R4C3, R4C6, R7C3, and R7C6

They're the corners of a box

Now, say all four boxes contain the same pair of numbers - we'll use 1 and 7, since that's what I saw in this one here (although those aren't the same row/col)

If that is all those boxes contain, you don't have a unique solution, and therefore it's not a proper sudoku - but everything here is proper, so that's not a possibility

One of those squares - say the lower right one - may have extra digits. In this case, let's say that it's 178 and not just 17

Basically, you can say that since it's really valid if it's either a 1 or 7 but one of the being valid means the other could be valid just by switching the digits, you can actually eliminate them both

so that box with 178 as green choices loses both its 1 and 7, turning it into an 8, and a lot of times that'll start chains.

In this case on Dec 13, it started a chain reaction that finished out the rest of the puzle

They're not always necessary, but if you spot 'em, sometimes you can speed up the solution

But, occasionally an x-wing or xy chain pops out near the ends of a puzzle.

I haven't learned xy chain yet, I've done okay with out it so far, although I think drwho has said that he finds it to be much better than an xy wing, and easier to find

For me, it seems an awful lot like guessing. I can never remember enough numbers, so I end up using reds anyways.

I've only seen one puzzle where it was absolutely necessary.

I used kind of a variant on the unique rectangles just now - the four corners all had 15 as choices, but the top two also had a 2, so I knew one of those two boxes was 2, and it cleared twos out of the rest of the row, which opened it up
