Every state in the world has a national debt. It is simple economics to understand that it is wise and profitable for nations to have and maintain a moderate sized debt.

Moderate being the appropriate word Mr O, moderate is not really what you would call the US debt.

Japan has far and away the biggest debt and possibly the biggest problem although it appears to be not getting worse. The figures are a few years out of date but it would help them if the US paid back the massive debt it owes to Japan. Problem is it can't. We worry about our national debt in Aus but compared to Europe and the US we have it easy. We just need the world to keep growing economically and we'll be fine. With China slowing down we need India to keep accelerating.

What I meant by get the money out of it was remove the ability of special interest / lobbyists to influence congress to write legislation that benefits them at the expense of the many.

Most of our national debt today can be attributed to not raising taxes while doing the following. http://www.globalresearch.ca/us-wars-in-afgha\nnistan-iraq-to-cost-6-trillion/5350789

Why haven't the Republican Senate and the Republican House put forward any debt reduction fiscal policies? The House has the Constitutional Power of the Purse. Because they are the party of Tax Cuts for The Rich. Trickle Down Economics. Privatize the Profits, Socialize the Losses.

With all due respect to a healthy exchange of ideas, is there any possible way we can all "give it a rest"?????

when I want to give it a rest I pull my browsers right border closer to the grid.

It's also possible to hide the chat by selecting one of the other tabs: Who's Online or My Friends. Although maybe just knowing there is a chat going on and it's temporarily hidden can be a distraction from Sudoku. Personally, when I'm doing a puzzle I don't notice the chat at all.

Are we just going to pretend the sequester didn't happen?

Diane, you're getting the picture. Education is not in the Constitution, it is a state and local issue. Roads, actually are in the constitution (Article I, Section 8, Paragraph 8), however the Interstate highway system was justified as necessary for national defense.

Tuco: I'm surprised you don't know what highways would be like without the federal highway system. You live in New York. The New York Thuway is a state run highway system. It is self supporting too. If the federal government had not created the interstate highway system, a coast to coast trip would probably involve paying lots of tolls.

Tuco: I am disappointed with Republican failure to use the power of the purse too. The reason is simple, if they were to propose meaningful cuts Obama would veto the budget. Eventually, there would be a government shutdown, and the Republicans are terrified of getting blamed for that.
