Don't you guys in the US have a national network ABC? Isn't that independent?

We have the ABC and also SBS and the brits have the BBC whose world service is pretty unbiased and independent. You'll probably find it if you search it on the net.

Phil: In the US there are 3 big TV networks ABC,NBC and CBS. In the radio market things are a little more varied. Tuco is right that money determines what get aired, but my point is that I would rather have money determine what gets air time than government censors. In the end money comes from advertisers who pay attention to ratings, so it is a democratic system in some respects.

But ABC, NBC and CBS are not government funded networks unlike your SBS and ABC. We have PBS which gets a small part of its funding from the government, with most of it's funding coming from individual and corporate gifts.

The much maligned FOX news network is big in the cable TV market but nowhere as big as ABC, NBC and CBS in the over the air broadcast market.
