oh good-o. i have a question for you. i'm on yesterday's expert, and down to the dreaded 23. still having trouble with this swordfish thing -- do you remember if it was in the rows or columns?

Columns.

You have several pairs and triples greened in, right? Look at the columns of 4's and try to locate ones that are locked (must be the same number), and remove candidates from other cells based on that.

You will only be able to remove one '4' from somewhere in the lower-left box, iirc, but it opens the puzzle.

Locked cells, I mean. Don't look for locked columns, I'm not sure if that works :)

Locked cells meaning two numbers, or just the same numbers?

Well a lot of 4's are missing, meaning lots of 4's in your greens. What you can do with that is look at all the 4's and figure out which ones are locked together, meaning two cells that, if one is a certain number, so must be the other.

And when you get all of that in your head, you can see, in this case just one, candidate of '4' that can be eliminated.

Because basically you'll have locked pairs lined up in the columns, where the 4 must be in one of the two cells, and therefore not in any other cell that both of those can see.

it's complicated... lol

i am working on it. :) usually i just solve experts by guessing, unless i've heard from someone that it's possible without forcing chains (which i call guessing) :)

Using locked pairs is a fairly basic strategy, but the swordfish takes that and uses several of them all at once, all over the grid, so it gets complicated and is rather difficult to keep in your head. You might want to copy the puzzle down on paper to draw lines between locked cells if you're having trouble.

Orange, I solved it! Oddly enough, by finding an unnecessary 5. Could have been dumb luck. But looking for the multiple locked pairs got me there (MS paint works better than photoshop.) Thank you!
