Diane: I can't let you get away with the blacks were 3/5ths of a person nonsense. The Constitution does not even mention blacks!
3:20 pm
drwho

It says 3/5ths of all other persons. You are reading into it several things that are not there.

At the constitutional convention in 1787 there were 2 factions. One faction wanted to count all slaves, the other did not want to count any of the slaves.
3:22 pm
drwho

One faction was from the slave holding states the other from the free states. Which faction do you think didn't want to count the slaves?
3:23 pm
drwho

If you said the delegates from the free states did not want to count the slaves, go to the head of the class.
3:24 pm
drwho

The reason they did not want to count slaves was because slaves were not allowed to vote.
3:25 pm
drwho

Now which side of that argument are you on? Do you think it is fair to count people for the purpose of determining a state's representation in Washington when those people cannot vote for their "representatives"?
3:27 pm
drwho

The 3/5ths of a person deal was a compromise which allowed the northern and southern states to unite under one federal government.

drwho - I'm quite familiar with the compromises that occurred with the founding of the county. Please don't recite facts that you learned in 6th grade civics. That's not the point. The point is that values, approaches evolve with time. Do you seriously think that Madison, Washington, Jefferson would say "yeah, AK47s are a good idea" today? Do you seriously think that they would argue the NRA position?
7:22 pm
drwho

Yes I do. And I'm not convinced you are familiar with the history of the 3/5th compromise, or why did you so grossly misrepresent it?
7:45 pm
drwho

Diane: I don't think you even read my posts starting at 3:18 CST, I suspect you only read the last one at 3:27. If you were familiar with the whole story you could not repeat the 3/5ths of a person meme in good conscience. And I don't want to think you would do that.
