Re Phil's post, how does one determine how many experts one has left in the archives?

You have to look at every one of them.

Looking at all the puzzles in the archives and counting the experts I have not done would take much longer than I am willing to spend. I know the time period during which I have done none of the experts, and I can easily count the experts I have completed before and after the blank period. However, it is still difficult to determine how many experts I have left to do because experts do not appear at regular time intervals. In the early days, there were only one or two experts per month, and this year experts have shown up much more frequently. If anyone knows the total number of experts to date, it would help me a lot.

I had 1204 points on the board this morning. The maximum possible score on the board was 7339. The most I can ever earn from doing more puzzles that are currently in the archives is therefore 6135. If every uncompleted puzzle remaining in my archive was a 5-point expert, I would have 1227 experts left to complete. However, my sampling shows that in 2006, 21 out of 268 puzzles (7.8 per cent) were experts and in 2007, 7.7 per cent were experts. In contrast, in the second half of 2014, a whopping 49 out of 184 puzzles (26.6 per cent) were experts.

The period I have not scoured for experts is essentially April 2008 through May 2014, approximately 2250 puzzles. An informed guess as to the average percentage of experts during that period might be 17 per cent, which suggests I may have 380 around experts left to solve.

Guess that explains why I am still in the Newbies list.
