what was your other hand doing then?
3:19 am
FranMag

hi sprite!
3:19 am
sprite

hey Fran!
3:19 am
sprite

Fran, I just realised, that flare-up with BabbleRabble just now, what caused it
3:19 am
FranMag

did you read TnC's chat with her husband down further in the log? very cute.
3:20 am
sprite

I think ARB's post about Babble having to be checked against another dictionary without racial slurs - I think BabbleRabble read that as referring to him :(
3:20 am
FranMag

i wasn't around for that sprite, i caught the tail end when jac asked if she had offended him.
3:20 am
sprite

yes, I read it, so sweet.
3:20 am
sprite

no, I mean today
3:21 am
FranMag

oh, i think it was when arb said people shouldn't get upset about words in the grid.
3:21 am
FranMag

that's why he said it wasn't about the grid
3:21 am
sprite

ah well, perhaps he rereads it and realises it was not offensive in any way
3:22 am
FranMag

i hope so, don't like tension in the chat log.
3:22 am
sprite

lol, people shouldn't. I have entered words that if my kids said them, I would make them rinse their mouths with green soap :)
3:23 am
sprite

no, me neither, such a shame for a great community like ours. But probably it is inevitable every once in a while.
3:23 am
FranMag

yes, since i wasn't around for the original incident, i don't know what set it off.
3:23 am
FranMag

reminds me of the MikeyinBerlin thing when i first started.
3:23 am
sprite

I hope things will be back to normal soon.
3:24 am
bluecat

what happened?
3:24 am
FranMag

just a misunderstanding in the chat, bound to happen when you aren't face to face with someone.
3:25 am
FranMag

heck, even when you are face to face with someone.
3:25 am
sprite

a little flare-up in the Babble chat about racial slur words that are valid words in the grid - got out of hand a bit when someone was offended by them.
3:25 am
sprite

yes, we cannot all be so of one mind as we, Fran, LOL
3:26 am
FranMag

i still need a few more brain cells transferred over so i can do the grids faster sprite.
3:26 am
bluecat

Ah... tricky.
3:26 am
sprite

nothing at all wrong with your brain cells, Fran
3:27 am
FranMag

aw, thanks sprite! :-)
3:27 am
sprite

lol, don't thank me for stating the simple truth!
3:28 am
FranMag

:-)
3:34 am

have to be off, see you tomorrow :)
3:34 am

bye sprite! see you tomorrow

hi all
5:17 am
h

go
5:36 am
h

resorting to greens, cuz i cant keep track anymore. 11 filled in.
5:40 am
h

hidden pair...
5:45 am
h

hidden triplet...
5:53 am
h

done - needed full greens tho...
6:46 am
spreadeagle

Me too. 13 filled in and still needed greens.
6:58 am
h

i think missing-digit scan is my weakness - it doesnt really occur to me until i see something missing in the greens...
6:59 am
spreadeagle

Same here. The greens make me feel pretty dumb sometimes.
7:00 am
h

wellp - at least we can get-them-done. a crutch is still useful if it allows someone mobility... :)
7:02 am
spreadeagle

True. I keep practicing in the hope of improving.
7:02 am
h

i have a feeling that it is like most-sports. lots of plateus (how do you spell that word?)...
7:04 am
spreadeagle

What I don't understand is that I am much more likely to need greens on an "easy" than a "medium". "plateau"
7:05 am
h

lol - if i get stuck, it only takes a couple of greens to spot something in an easy. mediums seems to require more filling in... i think im currently at a dont-need-greens-for-easy-plateau tho... :::knocks wood:::
7:07 am
h

mediums always seem to have a choke-point that if you cant find that answer - you get stuck. hards and above, you dont expect any easy-finds... imnsho... :)
7:08 am
h

sorry to keep babbling - good luck... ;)
7:09 am
spreadeagle

I'm doing an easy in the archives right now, with 20 filled in, and I can't see anything else. I might need greens, again, which will point out what I missed, again, and I'll be beating my head on the desk, again......
7:11 am
h

hehe - i dont have archive-access... prolly a good thing... :::stares at desk...:::
7:13 am
spreadeagle

It's worth "going pro" if you can spare the time. I'm determined to work thru the archives and better at solving these things.
7:14 am
h

yeah - i was hoping for an xmas-present, but decided it was more-fun to be frustrated... ;) besides, this way i only do one-a-day... :)
7:15 am
h

did you finish todays medium?
7:18 am
spreadeagle

Yes, today's medium was easy with greens. Well, there it is; in this archive I missed a lone "1" in the very center cell. ::: bangs head on desk - thump - thump - thump:::
7:20 am
h

please spare the desk... ok, spare your head too... ;) congrats... yeah - the middle square sometimes pops-up as mr-obvious... congrats. cya.
7:20 am
spreadeagle

bye
8:37 am
ypsigirl

done!
:)
8:46 am
eyeman

messed up. rats.
9:38 am
eyeman

yeah. Redeemed myself finally. For me, this medium was hard.
9:47 am
drwho

Difficulty score 23. Much harder than yesterday's, in my opinion. At about the half way point things opened up.
10:18 am
spellacked

maybe I'm braindead this morning, but it took greens. However, the first column scan through the greens showed a couple of hidden pairs that cleared the entire board.
10:26 am
adquilt

I just found this site. I'm a sudoku junkie and love finding other outlets for my habit.
10:28 am
spreadeagle

Hi adquilt, it's the best site I've found. There are alot of us here that are addicted.......
10:45 am
hurshy

i must respectfully differ from my esteemed colleague drwho's opinion in this case. i feel that there is no distinct opening up point, merely a steady, methodical plodding.
10:46 am
spreadeagle

Good call hurshy
11:01 am
adquilt

Thanks spreadeagle! I've already signed up for pro - all it took was clicking on the archives and not being able to do the puzzle.....
11:11 am
spreadeagle

Hi adquilt, Good choice. I don't recommend spending as much time as I do in the archives. My wife is getting suspicious.
11:13 am
adquilt

My husband already knows I'm addicted. I keep a book in my purse just in case I get stuck somewhere and have a few spare minutes. I was given a handheld, but never got the hang of it. Which I find strange, since I love doing the puzzles online.
11:14 am
spreadeagle

I got a hendheld too, and I have trouble reading it. Once you pass 50 the eyes start to go, among other things.
11:22 am
adquilt

Hey, I'm a few short of the big 50, but I'm having both knees replaced next week. My eyes seem to be doing pretty good though!
11:25 am
spreadeagle

Luckily that surgery isn't a big deal any more. My neighbor just had his done and walking the next day. Amazing. Another friend plays tennis everyday on his new knees.
11:55 am
spreadeagle

This is crazy; I'm working a medium from the archives, with 15 unknowns filled in, and I'm so stuck I may have to start guessing.
12:09 pm
UnikeTheHunter

Got it finally. I discovered a new technique involving groups of four numbers in rows of five cells. No guessing.
12:27 pm
poreid

how does it work - could always use a new technique
1:22 pm
adquilt

spreadeagle - which archive are you working on? Maybe I can lend a hand....
1:26 pm
spreadeagle

It was May 4, 2006. I finally solved it but I had to guess. There is probably something I missed. Let me know if you figure it out.

spreadeagle - got the 9s & 5s but am hitting a snag. Doesn't help that they actually expect to work for my paycheck. Maybe being a way from it for a while will help.

Minski

Try the 2s they are easy. I got them 1st.
3:12 pm
Zugzug7

me too. just srewed up on everything else. Twice.
3:19 pm
spreadeagle

adquilt - Paycheck? What's that? I "retired" 15 years ago at the ripe old age of 35 and became self-employed. Now I work much harder and don't get paid.
3:37 pm
Minski

zugzug, go pro then you can save what you know is right and you don't have to start completely over every time.

spreadeagle - on 5/4/06 puzzle: can't seem to see a way past guessing. I even pulled out my paper template to see if I could do it better on paper - didn't help at all! Think I'll just save it and come back to it in a few days. It's reached the point where it isn't fun anymore!
3:51 pm
spreadeagle

I found another one 5-5-06. Same problem.
3:52 pm
spreadeagle

Never mind. I just spotted an opening :)
3:54 pm

The opening didn't help; I'm still stuck.......
