Im pretty sure that a lot of the methods you all talkk about, I use, but I have no idea what they are called

chrissie2006

cross hatching i can figure out, but i have no idea what region intersection analysis is
9:32 am
UDbmas

ditto... I just go through the same sequnce every time to fill in what I can... I think the 4 things I do first fall into what seems to be called "scanning"
9:33 am
UDbmas

And I think I know what "naked pairs" and "naked triplets" are
9:34 am
chrissie2006

I don't... :)
9:36 am
UDbmas

if you use "greens" look for two squares that have only 2 possible numbers, then look at the squares that are in the same row, column or block to see if there is a second square that has the same 2 only possible numbers. I think that is a "naked pair" and triplets are the same, only there are 3 possible numbers

UDbmas

If you find a naked set, then all other squares in that row, column or block cannot be those 2 (or 3) numbers, so you can erase those greens.

chrissie2006 -- region intersection analysis is a little more general than what UDbmas describes. It is a generalization of the pointing pair and box/line reduction techniques described at scanraid.com.
3:11 pm
drwho

If you focus on the intersection of a 3x3 block and an line or column, the 3 cells they have in common are significant. If a digit is limited to those 3 square or any 2 of the 3 in the row, then it must be limited to the same 2 or 3 squares in the block and vice-versa.
