To answer the question, why hard? My difficulty score was lower today than for yesterday's medium, but it takes slightly more advanced analysis techniques than yesterday's puzzle.

The difficulty score today has been generated by a slightly modified algorithm. It should give expert puzzles slightly higher scores and spread out the scores a little more for the hard puzzles. Easy and medium scores may not change much if at all.

Carrol comes up with some great lines, especially in the Hunting of the Snark. Even in the preface he makes light of those who accused him of writing nonesense.

Yes, probably his most significant book academically was Symbolic Logic, which laid the foundation for computer programming languages.

I don't think it is published under his pseudonym of Lewis Carrol, but under his real name.

i must look into it. it seems not unlikely for him to have written such a work given his turn of mind.

Well, I finally had to set a checkpoint and take a guess. I did that twice, one poor guess, one good guess. After that is was easily determined.
