how do you figure out the difficulty score?

I don't, a computer program I wrote does.

and what is cross-hatching? I'm sure I know it, but I don't know the name...

what are the criteria your program uses to determine the difficulty? techniques needed?

Check out the Wikipedia article on Sudoku. That's where I got the term. Very descriptive.

The difficulty score depends on how what techniques are used and how many passes through the data are required to solve the puzzle.

umm, some other commuter darted out right in front of me as i was going at a good clip

neither of us got hurt badly -- a couple scrapes -- but both of our front wheels got tacoed
