'smithereens' first appeared in print in 1829 as 'smidereens.' it's from the Irish 'smidirin,' meaning a wee bit. i just had to look it up.

my icon is indecipherable. it is a man in an old fashioned deep diving suit standing under a tree with a ragged umbrella in the rain.
