was pretty much a wreck until things settled down a few days ago. cat started eating just yesterday, so it's too soon to say whether she's in teh clear. business closing down and office move-out went fine.

I hope your cat will be a little better every day now. Eating certainly will help and it is a good sign.

yup, hope so. this is after about six weeks of eating practically nothing, so she's skin and bones but seems like herself, personality-wise.

I have a kitty icon on my laptop somewhere - I should switch...

Also a very good sign. If she acts herself, she probably feels like herself again as well.

I don't think so.. at least I've never seen any that do. I don't check answers, though, I just make sure the one I've done works correctly but I don't consult the solutions in the back of the magazine :)

I had one with 2 possibles. I wondered if that was a faulty puzzle, or if it is no problem as it would be with sudoku.

Sprite, there are kakuro solvers for small puzzles (10x10 or smaller) online that may help you to figure out if two solutions are valid

sure! the number to the left of a row tells you the sum of the digits in that row. the number above a column tells you the sum of the digits in that column

digit zero is not allowed, and repeated digits within a set of digits is not allowed

but of course there are tons of combinations, and good amount of logic

i like the sound of it

that's it, i think. basic strategy is to see what sums have a unique combination. 3, for instance, can only be 1+2 or 2+1. 4 can only be 1+3 or 3+1. Thus, if a 3 and 4 cross, the square they have in common must be a 1

Guess I'd better do the shopping now, and not wait until it is too hot to move today. Back for this nasty sudoku later. I filled the left middle box, almost finished the middle 3 rows and put in some other numbers. After that: nowhere to go at all.

so far I've used intersections (only column/block, I think) and hidden pairs

along with the usual bag of tricks

Guess I am blind to the hidden pairs today. All I see are quartets, quintets and worse. But when I get back, I will give it a serious shot. Can't concentrate with kids around.

i can honestly say that one was tough, and since it is 2 AM here i doubt I will do much in the way of kakuro tonight, but i will make my best attempt

'Crashed' sounds like the appropriate verb for that situation. We've come to adapt the verb 'crash' for any sort of mechanical mishap to describe the sort of wreck left in its awake, akin to that of a car crash. By the way, way to go on ruining the movie with the opening line Don Cheadle.

A hidden pair is when there are lots of possibles, but in a certain row/block/column there are 2 numbers that only can go on 2 (the same) tiles. That means that on those 2 tiles no other numbers can occur but those 2 numbers. And in that same row/block/column those 2 numbers cannot occur on another tile.

actually, on my first guess i was wrong, so i went back to my last checkpoint and did the second alternative, which was right. then i got to another stopping point and checkpointed, then guessed on one. that one was wrong too, so i went back to the checkpoint and did the other one, which was right.
