CHAT LOG for Thursday, July 6, 2006

12:19 am
Penguin

Good morning all
12:19 am
elara6

Hiya :)
12:19 am
bangping

Morning Penguin
12:20 am
Penguin

Hi Elara and Bangping,
I hope you are both doing well.
12:21 am
elara6

tired but good :)
12:22 am
Penguin

At this hour, tired is no surprise. I'm ready for bed, but must first feed my sudoku addiction. 8-)
12:22 am
Penguin

For a "hard", this is starting pretty quickly.
12:23 am
raggedyandy3478

morning everyone
12:23 am
bangping

I was thinking that too
12:23 am
bangping

Hiya Andy
12:23 am
bangping

How'd the race go?
12:23 am
Penguin

Hi Raggedy
12:24 am
raggedyandy3478

the race was a bit rough, but had fun
12:25 am
raggedyandy3478

but as i learned today, there was some dude that had a heart attack running the same race
12:25 am
Penguin

Ouch. Did he survive?
12:26 am
raggedyandy3478

ya, hes staying in the hospital for a little while, but hes fine
12:26 am
elara6

whew
12:26 am
bangping

That's good
12:27 am
Penguin

That's a little too scary. I'm glad he's okay.
I'm glad you were able to have fun with the run.
12:27 am
raggedyandy3478

this race is notorious for giving people heart attacks, there is a hill in the third mile(of 6.2) called cardiac hill, earning its name when some dude had a heart attack after running up it, and with 55,000 participants this year, its a wonder only one person had a heart attack
12:29 am
Penguin

I appreciate physical fitness and exercise, but a long run in the heat of Georgia does sound a bit crazy.
12:29 am
bangping

Heh, where in GA is this?
12:29 am
raggedyandy3478

smack in the middle of Atlanta
12:29 am
bangping

*nod*
12:31 am
raggedyandy3478

they shut down a 6 lane road, and have to release us in groups, to the point where the last group starts 1 hr 20 min after the first people, its the largest 10k in the world
12:32 am
Penguin

Okay, the State of Georgia is a bit tetched. 8-)
(Or at least Hotlanta is).
12:32 am
bangping

I dunno, once I saw people in northern Michigan cutting holes in the ice on the big lakes to go swimming - I think folks everywhere are tetched. It ain't just GA :P
12:33 am
raggedyandy3478

penguin, ya the heat is a bit crazy in general, but im used to running in the heat of the day(around 3 - 4 PM) as opposed to 7:30 AM when this race started
12:33 am
raggedyandy3478

haha, bang, ive done that too, believe it or not, i used to live in detroit
12:34 am
bangping

So what we've determined is that raggedy is tetched ;)
12:34 am
raggedyandy3478

haha
12:35 am
elara6

(and I might GO to the Perchville festivals, but I've never actually done the polar bear swimming ;) )
12:35 am
Penguin

Being a Wisconsinite, I understand a winter dip in a lake. It is fairly easy to warm up afterwards (and rather fun to do so with the right company).

Andy, I have to agree with bang. Running during the heat of the day in Hotlanta is nuts.
12:35 am
elara6

I'm done, so going to head out and get some sleep. Night guys, see you tomorrow I'm sure :)
12:36 am
Penguin

Good night Elara. Congrats on finishing so quickly.
12:36 am
raggedyandy3478

i ran cross country for my high school team and we had to do in the heat of the day, so now im used to it
12:37 am
raggedyandy3478

*do practice in the
12:38 am
Penguin

I, too, ran high school cross country. Of course, with my knees, that is no longer possible. (I jog in place on a rebounder to get my exercise most days).
12:42 am
raggedyandy3478

im sure someday when i am a bit older i wouldnt dream of doing what i am doing now
12:43 am
Penguin

Oh, us old fogies still dream about doing things like that. Then, if we are smart, we exercise in the ways that we still can. I can still do more pushups or situps than most of my teenage students. 8-)
12:45 am
lawfully

Did anyone finish this? How's this?
12:45 am
lawfully

Did anyone finish this? How's this?
12:46 am
bangping

Why do I have this sudden urge to whack a whipper-snapper with my cane? :P
12:46 am
Penguin

Hi lawfully,
Elara finished a while ago. The rest of us are slow. (Or at least I am).
12:46 am
raggedyandy3478

nice penguin! ya, im gonna try to start working out in the weightroom when i get back to school in 4 1/2 weeks
12:47 am
lawfully

Hi Penguin... Thanks. So I have to be prepared to go slow :)
12:47 am
raggedyandy3478

done
12:48 am
lawfully

great. It doesn't look like a straightforward one...
12:49 am
raggedyandy3478

its definitely one of those triple inferences that are needed to get that one piece that lets the rest of it just flow
12:50 am
lawfully

triple inferences?
12:50 am
Penguin

Done. It took a lot of marking and one guess, but I just finished.
12:51 am
bangping

congrats :)
12:51 am
raggedyandy3478

say you know a 6 has to be in one colum, so then the rest of that colum can bet a 6
12:52 am
raggedyandy3478

thats one inferences, but then you have to make two more inferences based on that one, to finally get to a spot you can fill in, and then it just flows from there
12:54 am
Penguin

Raggedy, thanks for trying to explain this, but I'm too tired to follow right now. I may try to re-read the chat-log after I get some shut-eye.

Good night.
12:54 am
raggedyandy3478

does that make sense law?
12:54 am
raggedyandy3478

gnight penguin
12:56 am
raggedyandy3478

i gotta hit the sack for now, until tomorrow to you fellow addicts/enthusiasts
12:58 am
lawfully

sorry I was away,... taking phone call...
12:59 am
lawfully

I'll try to follow what you said...
1:07 am
skizzybiz

catching up on the past week of archives... got everything but the expert without marks. don't think i'll be so lucky this time
1:23 am
skizzybiz

hunh, that wasn't so bad
1:24 am
skizzybiz

and now there's a new one to play. maybe tomorrow...
3:02 am
rycaut

not too bad done pretty quickly tonight
4:29 am
rlc

is it possible to do this one without guessing?
5:51 am
peternl

hi all
6:25 am
sprite

Afternoon all
6:32 am
peternl

hi. ok so far
6:32 am
peternl

lots of triplets
6:37 am
sprite

Yeah, it's a nice one.
6:40 am
peternl

done. fun. ric: no guessing required
6:40 am
rlc

i'm at work, i guess thats why its not happening for me today, nt concentrating!
6:41 am
sprite

Probably, this is one that needs some attention to unravel :)
7:37 am
eyeman

Whew, managed to complete this before heading to work. Why are hard and expert easier to solve than "easy"?
7:38 am
eyeman

Take care everyone.
9:48 am
Moozey

I see what you mean Dr G, that one flowed a lot quicker than the easy yesterday
11:28 am
chebuctonian

hi all
11:28 am
Babbler

hi : )
11:28 am
chebuctonian

long time no see, Babbler! how are you?
11:29 am
Babbler

good thanks! you? : )
11:29 am
chebuctonian

just lost a court case with my government...
11:29 am
Babbler

sorry to hear that. : (
11:30 am
chebuctonian

so a bit peeved and depressed at losing over a year's worth of work with courts. Copyright stuff... they're as stupid as the Ordance Survey in the UK in that regard (no offense ;)
11:31 am
Babbler

that's sad. someone stole your ideas and you sued?
11:31 am
Babbler

(((hugs)))
11:31 am
chebuctonian

no, I asked the city for a computer record of its electoral districts
11:31 am
chebuctonian

and they wouldn't give it.
11:31 am
Babbler

uh? why?? I thought that was public information?
11:32 am
chebuctonian

I filed a freedom of information request, won the first appeal, but lost at the Supreme Court after the city didn't accept the first appeal
11:32 am
Babbler

that's so stupid!
11:32 am
chebuctonian

well, they claim it is public information, but getting it in computer format is "value added", therefore costs money :)
11:33 am
Babbler

value added?? flippin' jobsworths! what a joke. I am so sorry they wasted a year of your time on this.
11:33 am
chebuctonian

well, the UK's situation is just as nasty... don't be sorry, fight the buggers
11:33 am
chebuctonian

buggers == the Ordance Survey
11:34 am
Babbler

Ordnance Survey are well dodgy, everyone knows that. It's not what's on the maps, it's what omitted!
11:34 am
chebuctonian

and it's not letting citizens make their own maps....
11:35 am
Babbler

that's right. we don't really truly knows what's around us.
11:35 am
Babbler

oops *know. typo
11:35 am
chebuctonian

maps are stories we tell about the places around us. current maps tell the story of a civilization that can only live with cars... pedestrians don't figure as well, nor do cyclists. but you can't use the OS data and modify it without infringing - or paying large licenses
11:36 am
Babbler

why would you need to modify it? new architecture and that sort of thing?
11:39 am
chebuctonian

well, if you wanted to publish a cycling map... you'd need to buy a license. that's a modification to the computer data that produces the map - and you couldn't distribute that either
11:40 am
Babbler

you're kidding? something as basic and simple as that? that's so ridiculous. Ireally am astounded. red tape and jobsworths!
11:40 am
Babbler

(I hate jobsworths)
11:41 am
Babbler

it's so fishy. if they won't let you have the data, that tells me there's something major they want to hide from you. (or am I overly suspicious??)
11:42 am
Babbler

heh, perfect timing.... storm clouds are rolling in and I think there's a storm brewing. cue thunderclaps while we talk about The System....
11:43 am
Limer

Ha
11:43 am
Limer

Nailed that puppy!
11:43 am
chebuctonian

well, the OS doesn't want to diminish its monopoly revenues
11:43 am
Limer

Rank me, baby!
11:43 am
Limer

No green or red!
11:43 am
Babbler

hey Limer. here to nail that puppy and be ranked, baby?
11:43 am
Babbler

oh, I was too slow... :D
11:44 am
Limer

?
11:44 am
chebuctonian

so they won't let you use their basic street data to make new maps useful for community groups or others... pretty silly
11:44 am
Limer

No comprendo, muchacha
11:44 am
ShadeEagle

I'm starting to think Limer needs his own entrance music for when he finishes a puzzle
11:44 am
Limer

Hey, that's a thought....
11:45 am
Babbler

and his own exit music too.... "there goes Limer, doodle doo doo doo doo doo" !!
11:45 am
ShadeEagle

hey, I aim to please
11:45 am
Limer

later peoples
11:45 am
Limer

11:45 am
