Is this one hard or what?????
2:11 pm
drwho

I think it is hard, but my difficulty score is only 29!
2:12 pm
drwho

I have resorted to green and it is still looking tough.
2:20 pm
hokie carla

yes, I am doing my partial greens and still getting nothin'.
2:21 pm
drwho

It would help if I could fill in the green numbers correctly.
2:22 pm
hokie carla

yes, I have had that problem more than once.
2:22 pm
torgone

There's a bottom left number that opens up a lot ..
2:25 pm
drwho

Is it a number in the range from 1 to 9?
2:26 pm
hokie carla

gee, I hope so
2:28 pm
torgone

It is ..
2:28 pm
drwho

I like to think outside the box.
2:28 pm
torgone

Think in the center column ..
2:31 pm
torgone

And that was it ..
2:31 pm
hokie carla

This is just too much green. I'm starting over.
2:41 pm
hokie carla

well, that didn't really help
2:46 pm
drwho

My difficulty score program agrees that this should be ranked "Hard", but I am going to resort to "Expert" techniques to solve this one.
2:49 pm
hokie carla

I think I'm going to have to resort to plugging and hoping for the best. :-) Or maybe I'll go get a snack & then see if I can think any better.
3:35 pm
fit1

Where do you find the difficulty rankings, and where do you find the techniques to solve? I have been solving fairly steadily using greens
3:36 pm
hokie carla

drwho comes up with them. you can click on his profile & find a link.
3:38 pm
hokie carla

"them" being the difficulty score. not sure where the techniques are.
3:39 pm
drwho

There are some explanations of techniques at my web site too. The only expert technique I have explained there is the Alternating Inference Chain technique. In theory you shouldn't need it for this puzzle.
3:53 pm
hokie carla

Good grief, that was ugly. I think I had to use 3 check points. I must have a different style of play not conducive to that one, because I thought it was much worse than the experts and super-hard mediums.
3:54 pm
drwho

I think there is a hidden triple that I overlooked that is the key to the whole thing.
4:16 pm
sandbox74

commence
4:17 pm
drwho

There is a fairly obvious hidden pair I missed, but that doesn't break things open by itself.
4:20 pm
drwho

Actually, the hidden pair does break things open in an indirect way! There was also a hidden triple that I did see, but that wasn't much help in solving this one.
4:49 pm
sandbox74

terminate.. no greens
4:50 pm

that hurt the brain cells a bit

how do you decide if something is a fairly obvious hidden pair or a fairly shy naked pair?
