At least Eyeman is right about clickety-click. My scoring system ranked 1 other puzzle a 13, 2 others scored 12 and 1 scored 11.

Oddly I not doing clickety click, though it is all crosshatch. I just keep missing them.

No, not yet, anyway.

I downloaded a Java interpreter from Sun Microsystems. But it installed in memory whenever I turned on my computer. It slowed things down so much I had to get rid of it.

So you won't be able to run the dozens of web sites that have Java applets!

No. Those seem to work alright. I downloaded the interpreter so I could do programming.

Why Java?

It's like C, which I used to do. I don't have a C interpreter either.

You can get the Microsoft C compiler for free. Or they used to give it away. I will look up the link.

I wanted to make an improved AutoGreen that wouldn't fill in cells that you had already pared by hand.

Auto green scripts should be done in javascript, at least if you want to use the script here.

I have a big DOS basic program that I used to run off of Windows 98. But it doesn't work correctly off of whatever new Windows I have now.

I tried making an Autogreen. It calls functions that are already in IronSudoku or someplace. And I guess I can't declare a new variable. Anyway, it didn't work. And I had to make it all in one long line.

If you really want basic, microsoft gives away Visual Basic too (the introductory version).

That might work. My program called some DOS services and BIOS services that don't seem to work on this new computer. An introductory version might not let me do that.

No, Windows NT (XP) is an entirely different beast. You cannot call DOS services or BIOS! Especially BIOS, your program must be part of the OS to get that kind of privelege.

You will have to learn the Windows way to do whatever it was you were doing with DOS and BIOS services. But if you search long enough you should be able to find a way to do it.

You mean the DOS window under XP?

Possibly, they do some low level DOS emulation, but I think the BIOS calls may be your undoing.

Well, maybe if I try it under Windows Visual Basic it will be close enough that I can make it work.

UTH was right about the cross-hatching. In fact, this one can be solved by nothing more than cross-hatching the blocks. Maybe Eyeman was right about the easiest one this year. My scoring algorithm isn't that sophisticated :).
